Russian Soviet Scouting Stamps

The Young Pioneers were the Soviet equivalent of the Boy and Girl Scouts.  The organization existed between 1922 and 1990.  In addition to the common activities such as camping, learning about nature, and physical activity, there were lessons in patriotism.  The organization is also credited with eliminating widespread illiteracy. Their motto, 'Always Be Ready', is essentially the same as the scouting motto, 'Be Prepared'.

Today, scouting continues to be popular in Russia, and there are several organizations throughout the country. They participate more in international scouting gatherings (called "jamborees") held around the world.
