Mehregan Festival
The Mithrakana festival was celebrated by Achaemenian kings as followers of prophet Zoroaster. Mithra, a pre-Zoroastrian guardian angel, later taken as a Zoroastrian Yazata, was considered the protector of covenants and green fields, as she was the destroyer of drought and famine. To the ancient Indo-Europeans, Mithra was symbolized by the first rays of sun at dawn. The later Sassanian kings followed this tradition with the Mehregan Festival -- on the month of Mehr and Mehr day, which roughly coincides with the month of October in the Julian calendar.
