Item PY18

Dimensions: 48 x 24 cm.  This vintage print has some slight wear around the edges of the border due to age; this does not affect the actual image and will not be visible once the print is properly matted and framed.

The caption on the bottom of the print reads as follows:

Shapur's Triumph in Bishapur

The central scene of this large relief is Shapur's Triumph. Shapur is on the horse and with his outstretched hand holds Roman Emperor Valerian (253-260 AD), taken prisoner by Shapur at the Battle of Edessa.

The emperor with Roman toga kneeling in front of him is Philip the Arab (244-249) who had to ask for peace. Gordian II is trampled under the hooves of his horse, indicating that he was killed.

The king receives a laurel wreath from an angel. On both sides are the victorious troops with booty and their field sign, the horse brigades on one side, the infantry on the other.
