Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Achaemenid Dynasty, was a Persian emperor who expanded his empire by military and diplomatic means, and who showed remarkable tolerance and mercy to his subjects. He is best remembered for freeing the Jews from exile and restoring their Temple. His scroll, the first Declaration of Human Rights, continues to earn him praise from modern human rights activists.
