This 5 rupee note was called "Gandhi Cash" and was issued in 1951.  It was considered a promissory note and used for obtaining khadi, the kind of cotton that Gandhi spun in his home.  They could be redeemed at a khadi bandar, or outlet shop.  They are also considered a way to commemorate Gandhi for his support of the poor who spun cotton to improve their lives. There is writing in Hindi on the front with a portrait of Gandhi; there is writing in Urdu on the back, which commemorates Gandhi's desire to maintain a united India.
