khatam karee means "hand-inlaid."  To inlay is to apply wood or other materials in geometric shapes to decorate the surface of various objects. The average is 250 pieces for every cubic centimeter of inlaid work. This box has khatam inlay on the sides and bottom. The hand-painted top shows a romantic scene featuring music and song, such as that celebrated in the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. The artist's signature is visible in the far right photo above.

The side views show the detail that goes into constructing these boxes.  The notch shows how the box would be opened - gently but firmly grasp the end above the notch and then slide the bottom out. The interior is varnished wood.

The artist's signature appears on the bottom (far right photo).

It has multiple possible uses - great for watches, necklaces, or any item you want to keep handy but out of sight.
