The average is 250 pieces for every cubic centimeter of inlaid work. This box has khatam inlay on the sides and bottom. The hand-painted top shows a romantic scene featuring music and song, such as that celebrated in the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. The artist's signature is visible in the far right photo above.
The side views show the detail that goes into constructing these boxes. The notch shows how the box would be opened - gently but firmly grasp the end above the notch and then slide the bottom out. The interior is varnished wood.
