Sa'di

Sa'di (1182-1294), whose full name was Muslihuddin Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Mushrifuddin Sa'di Shirazi, was a linguist and a traveler as well as a writer, but it is for his poetry that he is best remembered today.  The spiritual poetry that inspired fellow Sufi mystics such as Hafez remain beloved classics. However, Sa'di was also a clever satirist who was quite well-known in his time for poking fun at politicians and civic leaders.

His poetry in the Bustan - his book on moral virtues and mysticism - as well as his stories in his better-known book the Golestan, the book of practical wisdom, raise virtually every major issue faced by humankind through stories, anecdotes and maxims which are at once enlightening, witty and entertaining. In these books as well as his many ghazals, he shares with his many generations of readers his wisdom, joys and sorrows.

His tomb in Shiraz remains a national landmark.
