Rumi
Of all the Persian poets, Mevlana Jalal-e-Din Mohammad Mevlavi Balkhi Rumi
(1207-1273 CE) is the most popular and widely read in North America. He
was born in the early 13th century in Balkh, in the eastern Persian Empire (now
Afghanistan). Faced with the Mongol invasions led by Genghis Khan in 1224, Rumi's family left their home and traveled west, settling in Konya (now Turkey)
where Rumi spent most of his life. It was in this city that he met his
friend and mentor, Shams al-Din Tabrizi, who it is said introduced him to the
mystic order known as the Sufis. Rumi is quoted as stating of Shams, "What I had thought
of before as God, I met today in a person."
Rumi's spirituality is expressed in his
poetry, most notably the Mathnavi, a poem which is quite long in its unabridged
form, and the Divan of Shams Tabrizi. These poems contain what we now
consider classic Sufi symbolism, such as the reference of the love of God being
like intoxicating wine. In fact, Rumi is credited with founding the
Mevlavi order of Sufis, better known in the West as the "Whirling Dervishes."
Through their constant turning to sacred music, with the right hand facing up to
God and the left hand reaching down to earth, the dervish achieves spiritual
ecstasy through union with God.
